Microgreens vs. Sprouts: What’s the Difference?

Microgreens vs. Sprouts: What’s the Difference?

Clearing the Confusion

We often get asked: "Are microgreens just sprouts?" The short answer is no. While both are young plants, the way they are grown—and the nutritional value they provide—are quite different.

1. The Growing Method

Sprouts are grown in water and high humidity, usually in a jar without soil or light. Microgreens, like the ones in our 1 SQFT Grown Kits, are grown in a soil-like medium and require light and air. This makes microgreens much safer and less prone to the bacteria issues sometimes found in water-grown sprouts.

2. Flavor & Texture

Because microgreens develop their first "true leaves" and use photosynthesis, they develop complex flavors. Our Pea Shoots taste like sweet, crunchy spring peas, while our Radish has a spicy, peppery kick.

3. Enhanced Nutrition

While sprouts are healthy, microgreens offer more fiber and a wider variety of phytonutrients because they have had the chance to interact with light and nutrients in the growing medium.
